OVERVIEW

Eucalyptus globulus, a cousin to the myrtle tree, is an evergreen tree that can grow more than 60 meters high, and it is this gigantic size that earned eucalyptus such renown. The leaves, when young, are silvery-blue, while the mature, drooping leaves are of a deep green. The essential oil is distilled from the leafy branches of Eucalyptus globulus. It has an herbaceous, fresh, cineolic fragrance with the characteristic camphor odor of medicinal ointments.

Eucalyptus oil is made from leaves of selected eucalyptus tree species which has perfumery, industrial and medicinal uses.The trees belong to the plant family Myrtaceae, which is native to Australia, Tasmania and nearby islands. The essential oil is used in soap and cosmetic industries. It is an effective substitute for java citronellol, hydroxyl citronellal and menthol. The oil is used in germicides and disinfectants to improve the odour. It is used as an antiseptic, especially in the treatment of infections of the upper respiratory tract and in certain types of skin diseases. The eucalyptus oil is powerful antiseptic and used all over the world for treatment of cough and cold, sore throat and other infections.

The main constituents in the E. oleosa stems essential oil were 1,8- cineole (31.5%), trans-pinocarveol (9.9%), p-cymene (6.8%), γ-eudesmol (5.6%), α-pinene (5.2%), limonene (4.2%), pinocarvone (3.5%) and spathulenol (3.5%).
